Joel’s Murals

In DC Living on August 25, 2009 at 6:30 pm

One of Joel Bergner’s masterpieces takes up the entire side of a building at the corner of 14th and U in the U Street corridor.  The story painted in latino-centric bright colors immediately invoked powerful emotions within me.  I took some pictures and had a chat with the artist to get some background information.

This particular mural was commissioned by a grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.  Its focus is on the plight of Afro-Colombians in the DC area,  some of whom are friends of Joel’s.  Their story is one of loss, courage and new beginnings.  Many in the DC area have political asylum due to the longstanding conflict in their country.

To celebrate this work and everything it stands for there will be a block party the weekend of September 12th.  Afro-Colombian culture, including food, music and speeches will be part of the festivities.

Homeless 2.0

In DC Living on August 20, 2009 at 10:01 pm

Wandoo Jin is a homeless man who lives on the street and blogs regularly.  He goes to the Apple Store. I stumbled upon his pitched tent at 14th st. NW and H st. NW on my way home.   His blog at a glance is a collection of rants and conspiracies but that is beside the point.  Of greater significance is his determination to be heard and consistency in his publishing, he uses multiple social media sites to get his message across.  He has motivated me to re-commit myself to my blog and write everyday.  Thank you Wandoo!

I am proud to announce my involvement with an exciting nationwide initiative! I will be volunteering in a marketing capacity; writing press releases, website content and developing their SEO & Social Networking strategy.

“I-Love-My-Country’s mission is to honor, recognize, empower and promote government participants in such a way that transforms the culture of government.

Our focus is on the dedicated individuals that are part of our government: federal employees; state employees; city government employees; armed forces; volunteers of government related activities, and; government partners and suppliers of services. Collectively, they are our government.

We are recognizing their contribution to our daily lives. We are empowering them by showing gratitude for the service they provide. Through our actions we are fostering a new level of fulfillment for government participants.

I-Love-My-Country stands for a healthy, smart and powerful government today and tomorrow. That means making our current government participants feel honored, recognized and empowered, and promoting government as a first option in order to attract and retain the best and brightest talent for our future.”
